Mascot Airport COVID-19 testing

Since January 5, 2023, passengers who enter Australia from China and in particular, Macau and Hong Kong, are required to take the Sydney Airport rapid COVID test. The test must be taken within 48 hours before the scheduled time of their arrival to SYD, and travellers must provide proof of their negative result.

The same policy applies to all travellers arriving at SYD on either a direct flight or a flight which has a stopover in a different country before landing in Australia. The acceptable tests include a negative COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAT). They must include Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests. Passengers must take the PCR test at Sydney Airport within 48 hours before their departure.

If you are entering Australia from a destination other than China, you do not have to provide evidence of a negative test. However, some countries, vessel operators, and airlines might require a test result at the check-in desk before allowing you to board the flight. Therefore, you ought to check the entry policies of your destination or transiting country before leaving for the airport.

Tips on arrivals at Mascot | Prohibited items

There are a few important things to keep in mind in order to successfully proceed with your baggage at SYD. Consider the limits on the amount of liquids, gels, aerosols, and powders that you can bring with you onboard.

First, an unlimited number of containers with inorganic powders is permitted per person, if the total volume does not exceed 350 millilitres. But, restrictions do apply to such powders as salt scrubs, salt, sand, certain powdered deodorants, and talcum powders.

In terms of organic powders, SYD restrictions do not apply to powdered food, protein powder, coffee, and powdered baby formula. Next, travellers should keep in mind the limits on carrying aerosols, gels, and liquids onboard.

These items include perfumes, conditioners, mouthwash, shampoo, deodorants, sunscreen sprays, hairspray, shaving cream, lip gloss, hairstyling gels, yoghurts, peanut butter, and others. You must not carry them in containers larger than 100 grams or 100 millilitres. The same policy applies to partially filled containers.

The list of prohibited items at SYD includes sporting equipment, kitchen utensils, and other objects that have sharp edges and points capable of causing harm to other passengers. If you are not sure whether a certain item is restricted onboard, contact your airline for this information.
