Sydney Airport Domestic & International flights: how early to arrive?

For Sydney Airport departures today, passengers are advised to arrive on time in order to avoid discomfort and unnecessary panic.

  • For international flights, the best time to arrive on-site is at least 3 hours before departure. This will give you enough time to register, drop off your bags, go through security, go through customs, and explore SYD before boarding.
  • For domestic flights, it is best to drop off your luggage at least 60-90 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

By following the above advice, you will avoid missing your flight, and ensure your journey is as stress-free and comfortable as possible.

COVID-19 information & testing at Kingsford Smith

The Histopath Test Centre, located in the T1, is the ideal option for taking a Sydney Airport PCR test before departure. Results are ready within just 90 minutes of your sample being taken. This testing service is available to all global and internal travellers up to 72 hours prior to their scheduled departure time. Remember that each destination has its own requirements regarding testing times, so please plan your time accordingly.

If you need to be tested on the day of departure, it is recommended that you arrive at the airport at least 3-4 hours before check-in so that you have enough time to take the test and receive the results. You will then receive the results in your email and in hard copy form.

Sydney International Airport services

At the SYD Airport departures level, you can find everything you need before your journey. This level includes a G1 departure lounge, gates (31-59), as well as pharmacies and a lost and found office. For those travelling with pets, you will find special animal care facilities at the airport. Please note that there is also an information centre where you can consult on any questions or concerns regarding your travels.

SYD Airport is a bustling hub with 45 million passengers and 150,000 daily visitors passing through its terminals each year. It offers a range of popular services, which you will find below.

Transportation before international flights

There are several options for transferring between the T1 International and the T2/T3 Domestic. These include:

  • T-Bus service,
  • Sydney Airport Train,
  • taxis,
  • Bus 420.

If you need to get into and out of the city, the most efficient option is the train, which only takes 13 minutes and runs every 10 minutes.

If you're looking for a shuttle service to the suburbs and regional areas of Sydney, contact Mozio.

Buses also regularly run the 420 from Mascot station to Burwood via the airport, and make stops at T1 and T3 stations.

If you want more eco-friendly options, there are indoor cycle racks on Level 1 International Airport Sydney departure T1, and next to the express drop-off area in the T2/T3.

International Airport drop-off

At T1, you can also drop off passengers at the departure level at Sydney International Airport. Please avoid large queues in the drop-off area and respect the 5-minute limit to avoid delays. Passengers with reduced mobility can use the special areas which are clearly marked. Check the Sydney International Airport departures map to view all drop-off areas and terminals.

Security screening

Under the Australian Government aviation security laws, everyone entering secure areas of Sydney World Airport (both internal and global departures) including passengers, aircrew, people accompanying passengers, and staff, will have to go through security screening. Also, you can visit the Australian Government's TravelSECURE website before you travel to familiarise yourself with the security screening process and regulations regarding what is and is not permitted on board your flight.

Below are some useful tips to help you prepare.

What should not be in your suitcase?

For flights from Domestic Airport, there are restrictions on certain items that can be carried on board (e.g. liquids, aerosols, gels, and powders).

Below is a detailed list of restrictions:

  • Inorganic powders: There is no limit on the number of containers per person, but the total volume must not exceed 350 millilitres. However, restrictions apply to some inorganic powders, such as salt scrubs, some types of talcum powder, and powdered deodorants.
  • Organic powders: Powdered baby formula, foodstuffs, coffee, and protein powder are under no restrictions.
  • Liquids, aerosols, and gels: Containers of more than 100 millilitres or grams are not allowed, even if only partially filled. For example, a half-filled 200-gram tube of toothpaste cannot be carried on board. Examples of liquids are perfume, shampoo, conditioner, and mouthwash. Aerosols, such as deodorant, hairspray, sunscreen spray, and shaving cream, are also restricted. Gels such as yoghurt, peanut butter, lip gloss, and hair styling gels are also subject to a 100 millilitre or gram limit.

Please visit the Australian Government TravelSECURE website for more information on what items are prohibited or restricted on flights.

What cannot be taken on board Domestic flights?

Certain items that could potentially be dangerous are prohibited from being carried in your hand luggage, to ensure safety standards are maintained.

  • Prohibited items include sharp items such as sports equipment, cooking utensils, and tools that could cause harm to others. If you are unsure about an item, it is best to (a) check with the airline you are flying with, (b) simply pack it in your checked baggage, or (c) leave it at home.
